The collective paddling clubs of California & Nevada present A Slalom Kayak Racing Series:

The Sierra Cup Slalom Series

What is the Sierra Cup?

California and Nevada has been the home of a number of notable river festivals, rodeos and races throughout the years. The Sierra Cup Series links these great paddling events into one big event, which spans the boating season. Racers enter the slalom races at any of the five events, points are awarded for entering an event and for placing in an event (more on that later). At the end of the season, the points are tallied and the winners announced. The top 10 point earners are awarded trophies and the #1 boater of the year's name is inscribed on the Sierra Cup (currently on display at Sierra South River Store, Kernville, California).

All ages, gender, ability, and types of boat are welcome and prizes will be awarded to the top ten finishers overall. Since all ability levels have an equal opportunity to accumulate points, everyone has a chance to place in the top ten - novices, intermediates and experts alike!

What are the rules?
  1. A paddler must compete at a minimum two races.
  2. A paddler's races results will be used to compute total cup points.
  3. Points are accumulated for the same class per competitor, i.e. must all be K-1, K-1 W, C1, C2, etc. May earn points in more than one category per race; however, points are accumulated for the same class only.
  4. Cup races follow ICF slalom rules: 2 point penalties for touches, 50-point penalties for missed gates, and adding the times of the two runs together for the final score. The race director may elect to use the old rules (best of two runs) for selected classes such as novice, OC-2, or K-2 classes.
  5. Ties: 1st consideration: The Paddler who attended the most races is placed higher. 2nd consideration is the number of competitors in a class at a particular race. The higher the number of competitors gives precedence over a smaller class.
  6. The Sierra Cup organizers have final say in all aspects of the Series regarding rules, racing and operation. Their word is final.

How are points awarded?

Everyone who signs up for competition at any of the series events gets at least one point for entering, after that it depends on how you place in your event:

1st place 20 points 6th place 6 points
2nd place 16 7th place 4
3rd place 12 8th place 2
4th place 10 9th place or lower 1
5th place 8

Who can enter?

All boats, ages and abilities are invited to participate. K1 race boats - yes! Juniors - yes! First time racers - yes! Your old beat-up boat from 20 years ago - yes! Playboats - yes, yes, yes!

Why should I enter the Sierra Cup? Why not? The best reason for participating in the Sierra Cup is that it's fun, but it also gives you a chance to meet other paddlers and the rivers they haunt, to paddle at places other than your home rivers. Some of the race organizers also host great festivals, parties, and auctions where you can check out the latest and greatest equipment
