Whitewater Kayaking

Whitewater kayaking means floating though wilderness canyons, feeling the current and rushing water beneath you, joyfully exploring new rivers with new friends, and playing like otters while bouncing down rapids. The experience of kayaking is excitement, beauty, fun, camaraderie, physical challenge, adventure, and most of all, personal enrichment.

California Canoe & Kayak is a Jackson Authorized Kayak School. We are dedicated to creating paddlers for life and our instructional program is designed to allow students to progress rapidly towards self-sufficiency. We believe that kayaking can be enjoyed by most anyone from 8 to 80, but it does require more than a weekend to master the fundamentals and appreciate the joy of running a river. Our 4-day Rapid Immersion class on the South Fork American River is for those who have little or no kayaking experience but are looking to accelerate their learning curve while being completely immersed into the sport. For an exhilarating paddling vacation, our 5-day Full Immersion classes on the South Fork American or Trinity Rivers are a great choice. This will allow you a little more free time at the end of the day to enjoy your beautiful surroundings. We also offer a Refresher class for those who’ve done some paddling or taken a 2-day introduction course before. And we have an Intro to Moving Water on the lower American River in Sacramento for those who want to get a taste of river kayaking under gentler conditions. Other offerings include River Running and Play Boating clinics, Class II guided trips and swiftwater rescue training.

Learn the Kayak Roll, Guaranteed

If you do not learn the kayak roll by the time you finish one of our 4- or 5-Day Rapid Immersion courses, FREE rolling classes will be provided until you complete your first unassisted kayak roll.

About Our Instructors

Entering into the world of whitewater kayaking is a challenging and at times intimidating endeavor. Well aware of this, CCK instructors draw from years of personal experiences and trainings that have been provided by The World Kayak Federation and American Canoe Association to create fun and effective learning environments. CCK instructors are stewards of the river and we take pride in their performance.

South Fork of the American River

The South Fork is a spectacular learning location for all skill levels. It has consistent water flows from spring through the end of September, and plenty of class I, II and III whitewater opportunities.

Water flows in the South Fork American River are determined by hydroelectric facilities located upstream, and are not subject to control by El Dorado County or commercial companies operating under permits from the County.

Trinity River

The Trinity River is located in the coastal mountains with the scenic Trinity Alps as a backdrop. There are numerous sections of river to paddle, which makes your experience diverse throughout. The Trinity is one of the few California rivers that flow consistently into the fall months. We camp in a central location with all the amenities close by. We have access to hot showers, flush toilets, small general store, and a local cafe.
