L3: Intro to Tides and Currents

Intro to Surf ZoneThis class has two parts

Learn the fundamentals of Tides and Currents and how they affect route planning, boat control, and on the water navigation. We will learn what causes these currents, how to identify areas with stronger currents and how tide height affects water movement, as well as basic marine chart reading skills. We will then apply what we learn in a beginner-friendly tidal race and learn how to use the current to our advantage, cross the current, control our boats in current, and how to enter and exit the current efficiently. We will launch on the Sausalito side of Richardson Bay and venture out towards Angel Island and back.

Part 1: will be taught in milder tides and currents day.  Freshwater lake or saltwater cove environment. Waves should not exceed 2 foot; winds should not exceed 10 knots; within ½ mile of shore. If teaching/assessing in current should not exceed 4 knots.

Prerequisite: This is a Level 3 class and all students must have taken a Sea Kayaking II class or higher within the last year as well as good boat control and the ability to paddle 6-8 miles over the course of a day. Students are required to have their own boat and gear for this series of classes. If you are in need of rental equipment please contact us to make arrangements.

Part 2: Expand upon the fundamentals of Tides and Currents and learn how to plan routes using currents to your advantage, learn boat control techniques in faster moving currents, and how to locate and play in tide rips. We will learn how the variation of water depth and sea floor profile affect currents, as well as a more thorough overview of marine chart reading from a Kayakers perspective with on the water navigation. We will learn and practice how to pass through areas with stronger current, cross extended areas of stronger current while staying in a group, and how to handle various situations that may arise if our plans don’t go according to plan!

Prerequisite: This is a Level 4 class and all students must have taken the Introduction to Tides and Currents (part 1) or a qualified substitute. Good boat control and the ability to paddle 8-10 miles over the course of a day. If you are in need of rental equipment please contact us to make arrangements.

Some combination of 2-3 of these conditions may exist but all 4 together are not recommended in the same course.
