We will learn what causes these currents, how to identify areas with stronger currents and how tide height affects water movement, as well as basic marine chart reading skills. We will then apply what we learn in a beginner-friendly tidal race and learn how to use the current to our advantage, cross the current, control our boats in current, and how to enter and exit the current efficiently. We will launch on the Sausalito side of Richardson Bay and venture out towards Angel Island and back.

L4: Tidal Current & Rough Water

This class may be taught in Level 4 Conditions: Average wave height less than 3 feet; winds should not exceed 15 knots; current not to exceed 4 knots. Groups must be kept within 1 mile of shore. This is not always the case in the Bay.

This class is Equivalent to the American Canoe & Association Level 4 Courses. Learn to ride the tide! Dealing with the tidal current is fun, and essential if you want to paddle in places like San Francisco Bay. Launching from Horseshoe Cove, beneath the Golden Gate Bridge, we'll cross to Angel Island on the flood tide and return via the tide races at Raccoon Straits and Yellow Bluff. This class is a great way to improve your rough water s

kills and rescues! This class is timed to work with an ebbing tide. You will learn such maneuvers as entering and exiting the eddy, ferrying across the current, bracing and handling waves in a tide rip and surfing waves in the tide rip (optional).

Note: Due to the nature of annual tidal cycles, this class is only offered during fall and winter months.

Check out photos from the previous class here.
